If you\u2019ve ever spent time with a puppy, you might have noticed fast breathing. How can you tell if this is normal, or if a puppy breathing fast could be a sign of an underlying health issue? The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalcreekanimalhospital.com\/staff\/\">team at Coal Creek Animal Hospital<\/a> is here to help with just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Normal Puppy Respiratory Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Puppies typically breathe between 15 and 40 times per minute. This can speed up or slow down a little bit based on your puppy\u2019s behavior or current mood. Those include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dreaming<\/strong>: If your puppy is deep in a REM cycle and dreaming about fetch, his breath rate could increase. This is usually normal and not anything to worry about.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Excitement: <\/strong>When your dog gets excited about something, you might notice that he starts breathing faster.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anxiety\/Stress: <\/strong>Similarly, negative emotions like anxiety or stress could lead to increased breath rates in dogs. If your dog is regularly anxious, you might want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalcreekanimalhospital.com\/services\/wellness-preventive-care.html\">talk to your veterinarian<\/a> about help for calming your pup.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Temperature Regulation: <\/strong>If your puppy gets a little overheated, he might start to pant to try to regulate his body temperature.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abnormal Puppy Respiratory Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are certain instances when your puppy\u2019s fast breathing is a sign of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalcreekanimalhospital.com\/blog\/top-signs-your-dog-is-sick\/\">health issue<\/a>. Abnormal puppy respiratory rates include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Above Average Respiratory Rate: <\/strong>If your puppy\u2019s respiratory rate soars about 40-60 breaths per minute while at rest or asleep, it is time to schedule a veterinary visit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respiratory Distress: <\/strong>When puppies have trouble breathing, they might start to open their mouths wide, use stomach muscles to try to breathe, or gasp loudly. These are all signs of breathing issues that need veterinary attention.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Change in Gum Color: <\/strong>If your puppy is not getting enough oxygen, his gums might turn pale, gray, or tinged blue.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Additional Symptoms: <\/strong>Have you noticed your puppy breathing quickly while also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalcreekanimalhospital.com\/blog\/heart-health-for-pets-recognizing-the-signs-of-heart-disease\/\">coughing<\/a>, lacking interest in food, or fatigue?
