At Coal Creek Animal Hospital, we know your pets are family, which is why their safety matters just as much as your own during this busy time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colorado\u2019s winter weather can be unpredictable, and with holiday gatherings, rich foods, and cold temperatures, there are seasonal risks that every pet parent should keep in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a little planning, you can help ensure that your pets enjoy the celebrations safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Festive Foods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday meals are delicious for us, but potentially dangerous for pets. Many classic seasonal foods can cause stomach upset, pancreatitis, or even life-threatening toxicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Foods to Keep Out of Paw\u2019s Reach:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Chocolate and cocoa<\/strong> (toxic to dogs and cats)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Xylitol-sweetened treats<\/strong> (found in sugar-free desserts and gum)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bones from turkey or ham<\/strong>\u2014they splinter easily and can cause choking or internal<br>injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fatty foods<\/strong> like gravy, skin, or table scraps (common causes of pancreatitis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Onions, garlic, leeks<\/strong>\u2014often found in stuffing and holiday dishes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alcohol<\/strong> or <strong>unbaked dough<\/strong> containing yeast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Macadamia nuts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember: sudden diet changes, even healthy ones, can upset your pet\u2019s stomach, so keep treats minimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure these treats are out of paw reach, trash cans should be sealed and placed in hard-to-reach areas. After preparing meals with bones or fatty foods, it is best practice to discard these scraps immediately in outdoor trashcans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Do If Your Pet Eats Something Dangerous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect your pet has eaten a toxic food or substance, contact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An emergency animal hospital<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pet Poison Hotline: (855) 764-7661<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cold Weather Safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colorado winters are beautiful, but the temperatures can be hard on our furry friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protect Those Paws<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ice, snow, and de-icing salts can irritate paw pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wiping your pet\u2019s paws after walks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using pet-safe paw balm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Considering booties for dogs who tolerate them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Know the \u201cDanger Zone\u201d Temps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to veterinary guidance, small dogs hit the <strong>danger zone<\/strong> at <strong>20\u00b0F<\/strong>, and medium\/large dogs at <strong>10\u00b0F<\/strong>\u2014including windchill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s <strong>wet<\/strong> outside (snow or sleet), add <strong>10\u00b0F<\/strong>, since moisture pulls heat from the body faster. In dry conditions between 20\u201330\u00b0F, most small and medium dogs should stay out <strong>no more than 20 minutes<\/strong>, and larger dogs about <strong>30 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bundle Up (If Needed)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Short-haired breeds, seniors, and puppies can struggle in cold weather. A winter coat or sweater can help them stay comfortable on chilly days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limit Outdoor Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even snow-loving breeds can get hypothermia. Keep walking shorter during cold snaps and watch for shivering, lifting paws, or reluctance to move, all signs your pet is too cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beware Antifreeze Toxicity:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antifreeze has a sweet taste but is extremely toxic. Check your garage and driveway for spills.
